Concentration gradient P3OT/PCBM photovoltaic devices fabricated by thermal interdiffusion of separately spin-cast organic layers

چکیده
A series of organic photovoltaic devices consisting of concentration gradients of poly (3-octylthiophene) (P3OT) and [6,6]-phenyl-C61 butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) were fabricated by thermally-induced interdiffusion of consecutively spin-cast layers of P3OT and PCBM from solvents of chloroform and pyridine, respectively. The device performance was evaluated as a function of the layer thicknesses, interdiffusion temperature, and interdiffusion time. A maximum power conversion efficiency of 1.0% under AM1.5G simulated solar spectrum was obtained for 70nm P3OT thickness, 45nm PCBM thickness, and interdiffusion at 150 1C for 20min. Auger spectroscopy depth profiling measurements indicated that the optimal devices consist of concentration gradients of P3OT and PCBM extending across the entire film in opposite directions. & 2009 Elsevier B.V. Reappraising the Need for Bulk Heterojunctions in Polymer-Fullerene Photovoltaics: The Role of Carrier Transport in All-Solution-Processed P3HT/PCBM Bilayer Solar Cells
The most efficient organic solar cells produced to date are bulk heterojunction (BHJ) photovoltaic devices based on blends of semiconducting polymers such as poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3HT) with fullerene derivatives such as [6,6]-penyl-C61-butyric-acid-methyl-ester (PCBM). The need for blending the two components is based on the idea that the exciton diffusion length in polymers like P3...

The microstructure of the active blend layer has been shown to be a critically important factor in the performance of organic solar devices. Block copolymers provide a potentially interesting avenue for controlling this active layer microstructure in solar cell blends. Here we explore the impact of backbone fluorination in block copolymers of poly(3-octyl-4-fluorothiophene)s and poly(3-octylthi...

Large-area graphene grown by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is a promising candidate for transparent conducting electrode applications in flexible optoelectronic devices such as light-emitting diodes or organic solar cells. However, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the polymer photovoltaic devices using a pristine CVD graphene anode is still not appealing due to its much lower conducti...

Plastic photovoltaic devices offer a real potential for making solar energy economically viable. Unfortunately, bulk heterojunction (BHJ) solar cells fabricated from blends of the commonly used materials poly(3hexylthiophene), P3HT, and phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester, PCBM, sometimes exhibit low efficiencies even when the procedures followed often produce solar cells with efficiencies exc...
